Tracking where you specifically rank on keywords is about recovering that almighty (not provided) keyword data Google used to give us. Sure you could just see your highest entrance pages from Organic, but tracking specific keywords is more precise and profitable. Luckily there are a raft of SEO tools that will reveal where you’re currently ranking in search engines or let you track specific keywords you upload to them. Below are some of the best.

Rank tracking tools are essential for any business that relies on organic traffic for leads. If you’ve been in business for any amount of time there tends to be a strong correlation between the keywords you’re getting the most traffic from and your best selling products or services (not including the influence of ad spend) Rank tracking tools make it easy to keep up with which terms are worth the most to your business.

Overall there are two broad categories of rank tracking tools. There are some that have populated data inside them already, and those that you have to add keywords to. Basically some tools have at will information and other will start tracking once you tell them to track. More broadly speaking there are also a variety of tools that are “all-in-ones” which try to package everything you might need for SEO into one package. These are all of varying qualities, but we’ve definitely gathered the best of the pack here, and there’s definitely a target market for each of them.

The Best At Will Rank Tracking Tools:

In terms of total depth of keyword knowledge, no one currently has a larger set of keywords than SEMrush. SEMrush fall in the category of an at will keyword tracking tool. Which is great because you can just enter a term you care about and spy on competitors as well. Even better you’ll get historical data going back years on yours, or your competitors site rankings. SEMrush has been adding in all-in-one features lately, but their overall backlink bank is not really big enough to be the best in the category. SERPstat is a recent entrant into the at will tracking platforms. While it doesn’t have as much data as SEMrush it does have many useful features, and I actually use both on a day to day basis.

The Best Rank Tracking Tools Depending on Needs:

Granular Data:

If you demand an extremely granular level of data, I would recommend a tool like Authority Labs, Advanced Web Rankings, or SERPwoo. These can be slightly cheaper solutions that will let you track the keywords you’re most interested in at the highest possible resolution.

PPC and SEO information:

If you’re more interested in PPC information, but also care about organic rankings SpyFu is an excellent option, though again, you’re not getting to get as much data from the git go as SEMrush.

The Cheap Option:

Moz Bar is free and if you just want to check specific keywords it lets you quickly figure out what position you rank in for a specific term.

App Rank Tracking:

Need App downloads? Well it turns out search engines aren’t the only algorithm in town that matters, Searchman is a great option if you want to keep track of the keywords users might use to find your app. The only problem there is that since Apple

The Best All-In-Ones:

I’m generally not a huge fan of all-in-one tools since no single tool has as much info as other options out there. Cognitive SEO and WebCEO are great if you’re somewhat technically savvy and trying to keep an eye on things. HubSpot Marketing is great

MOZpro has been a long time favorite but aren’t the “best in class” tool they once were. They are exceptional though if you want to actively work on your site and have lots of content.

For any business that makes money on the Internet, your organic rankings can be the difference between great margins from free traffic and not. Now, if you know which rankings are performing best you can also figure out which pages to work on refining further. Above are some of the best tools in the category, but again, it’s important to shop around since every businesses individual needs will change.
